Orgasmic Dysfunctions 101: An Overview

Orgasmic Dysfunctions

When it comes to sex, we often think about foreplay and sexual adventure as being natural precursors to a satisfying orgasm. Sometimes, however, men can experience an orgasmic disorder which can diminish their sexual satisfaction or even affect how well they are able to perform. In extreme or chronic cases, orgasmic disorders can create a negative connection with sex, causing men to shy away from all types of relationships. Luckily, there are a number of treatment options available and the first step to knowing how to ask for help is to understand which orgasmic disorder you may be dealing with.

Early/Premature Ejaculation

Early ejaculation is more commonly referred to as ‘premature ejaculation’. A shift in how the condition is addressed is the result of a better understanding as to what constitutes early ejaculation. Many doctors are reluctant to diagnose a man as having early ejaculation unless he climaxes in under a minute after penetration or at any time before penetration happens. Other doctors are happy to discuss treatment options if a man complains that he simply climaxes before he wants to. This more flexible definition for early ejaculation has made it possible for many men to improve their stamina and also to develop a better understanding of how long sex typically takes. According to a number of studies, the actual act of penetrative sex typically only lasts between 5 and 10 minutes, though there are certainly men who use specific techniques to last longer. But, for men who are lasting 5 minutes during intercourse and wondering if they may have early ejaculation, the real answer is they probably simply need to adjust their technique in order to lengthen their staying power.

For men who do struggle with climaxing in a minute or less, there are a number of treatment options which can be tried at home or with the help of a medical professional. Numbing agents, cock rings, restriction devices, sex therapies and counselling have all been effective in treating men who struggle with premature ejaculation. Changes in diet and fitness also play a role so if premature ejaculation is a new condition for you, consider speaking to a general practitioner first before seeking out specialised help.

Delayed Orgasm

Most men wouldn’t think lasting too long would be considered a dysfunction but lasting too long during intercourse can be painful and frustrating for both people involved. Delayed Orgasm is thought to affect a number of men, though research remains scant. As with many other forms of sexual dysfunction, men are reluctant to see help for this condition and, in many cases, men feel as though there is no treatment available. Sexual intercourse which lasts longer than 30-45 minutes without a climax can become unpleasant as best and, in extreme cases, can result in injury to the penis or vagina.

Treatment options for this type of condition focus on sexual therapy and often use a three stage system for men to achieve healthy orgasms again. In the first stage, masturbation is introduced as part of sexual play, encouraging him to get more comfortable with climaxing in front of his partner. Mutual masturbation and a combination of vaginal, oral and anal sex are used in order to help the man become more comfortable and able to climax. This sex therapy combined with traditional counselling has proven to be effective for many men dealing with this issue.

Premature and delayed ejaculation are the two most common forms of orgasmic dysfunction for men. Other sexual performance issues can affect the quality or quality of a man’s orgasm and these should be dealt with separately. Dealing with problems regarding stamina, for example, may be the solution for a man worried about premature ejaculation without having to take the problem to his doctor. Understanding these two fundamental issues can give many men the motivation they need to finally seek out help and take back control of their sexual happiness and well-being.
