ADD and Premature Ejaculation – Is There a Link?

ADD

Premature ejaculation is a common condition that strikes men regardless of their race, age or socio-economic standing. It crosses all lines and has been seen and studied in every culture and on every continent. Despite its pervasiveness, the condition is often misunderstood, partly because men feel embarrassed or ashamed by it, as if it is somehow a reflection of their masculinity.

The truth is that conditions such as early ejaculation or erectile dysfunction are often the result of many different factors. While testosterone levels do play a role, they are rarely the only factor at play. Instead, everything from how a person eats to his physical fitness and career path are often bigger triggers. Finally, there can be underlying medical conditions which can both trigger and exacerbate these conditions.

Sexual Performance and Co-morbidity

When more than one condition is present at the same time in a single patient, it’s called co-morbidity. While that may sound a bit imposing, it simply means that the conditions cannot be evaluated independently since doctors must consider how one condition may be affecting the other. In the case of men suffering with sexual performance problems, other medical conditions such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety disorders and depression are often also present and most doctors ask about these conditions during the initial exam.

Researchers are finding that other conditions can also play a role in situations like this and now doctors are broadening their questions when men come to them complaining about premature ejaculation. One of the more current changes has been a spike in men afflicted with ADD or ADHD and who find themselves struggling to perform in bed as they would like.

There is a lot of controversy about Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), particularly when it comes to adult diagnosis. Some believe these conditions are simply new labels slapped onto old behaviours while others say the conditions are very much real because they themselves have experienced it. While the jury is still out over the legitimacy of these conditions, the fact remains that millions of Americans have been diagnosed and, of those people, many have found relief through a variety of treatment options.

ADD and ADHD are not the same condition, though they are commonly referred to as being one and the same. In its simplest form, ADD is an inability to stay focused on a single task and ADHD compounds that with an additional need to fidget, hence the hyperactivity is its name. These conditions are sometimes treated with pharmaceuticals but many people prefer more natural methods including changing their diet or using natural herbs and supplements to help focus their mind and calm their body.

So what’s the connection between them and premature ejaculation? Some experts think the same process by which the brain is constantly being redirected and unable to focus could be the culprit behind men who have chronic sexual performance problems. For men with premature ejaculation, it’s about becoming overstimulated too quickly. The conditions can also result in erectile dysfunction as a man’s attention is forced from sex to worries about work. These conditions may also affect delayed ejaculation in the same way.

Doctors and researchers are continuing to investigate the link between these conditions and sexual health for men. By discussing this condition with men who have been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD doctors hope not only to develop a better understanding of these conditions but also to better understand how seemingly unrelated conditions can – and often do – affect a person’s sex life. In this way, researchers and specialists hope they can develop better treatment plans for patients presenting with more than one condition which will treat not simply the problem, but the person dealing with them.
