Premature ejaculation is the most common form of sexual dysfunction in the world. It is experienced by men across social, economic and cultural lines and is estimated to affect every man in the world at one point or another. Considering how widespread the condition is, it should come as no surprise that it has been the focus of numerous studies, articles, books and segments on a variety of television programs. While many men know some of the more common causes for the condition, there’s one that is often overlooked and underestimated: sex.
Can Sex Cause Sexual Performance Issues?
Premature or early ejaculation can be caused by a number of different factors. Sometimes the condition is sporadic, touched off by bouts of stress or anxiety. Other times a poor diet and lowered fitness level can make it a chronic issue. Usually, it’s a mix for most men and they will experience a few episodes of it, then nothing and, as they get older, it can become a more serious problem. Even for men who maintain a healthy diet, keep themselves in good physical condition and manage their stress find they still have problems with performance. For these men, the way in which they have sex could be the problem.
Make no mistake about it – sex is a intense physical activity. Researchers at the University of Quebec recently found that men burn an average of 4.2 calories per minute while having sex. They also measured something called METs, which stands for Metabolic Equivalent Task. This number reflects the intensity of activity. Running, for example, scores 8.5 METs per minute. When having sex, men rack up 6 METs per minute, making sexual activity on par with moderate exercise.
Knowing that helps to understand why a man’s body can become so exhausted relatively quickly. The other component to understanding how sex can cause performance issues deals with understanding how the penis is stimulated. By and large, the male penis is much more sensitive along its underside than it is along the top.
Position, Pace and Performance
Once we understand how physically intensive sex can be and how sensitive the male penis is, it becomes easier to understand how sexual performance comes into play. When men experience premature ejaculation over a long period of time, changing sexual positions and varying the pace can have a massive impact.
One of the most effective sexual positions for men struggling with premature ejaculation is the classic Doggy Style. This position focuses most of the friction along the top of the penis and also allows men to control the thrust, intensity and angle, all of which can be tweaked and varied in order to help him maintain his level of arousal without going overboard. Any position where the man is behind his partner will facilitate this, including the spoon position and even reverse cowgirl. Positions with the female partner on top, however, will need to be modified somewhat so that the man’s partner understands that he needs to be in control of the intensity.
Pacing is another simple way for men to increase their stamina. Simply slowing the rhythm or stopping altogether for a moment allows the man to catch his breath and gives him the chance to regain control of his arousal. These breaks can mean simply stopping to change positions or even breaking up active sex with mini-rounds of foreplay, mutual masturbation or oral sex.
Coping with premature ejaculation can be difficult for men and their partners. By taking the time to consider how their approach to sex may contribute to the problem, men can make changes and adjustments to increase stamina and pleasure for themselves and their partners.
